La estadounidense Katie Ledecky conquistó su decimoquinto título mundial y su primero en esta edición al imponerse en la final de 800 metros en estilo libre, este sábado en Gwangju (Corea del Sur).

Ledecky, de 22 años, pudo distanciar al final a la italiana Simona Quadarella, a la que relegó a más de un segundo (8:13.58 contra 8:14.99).

Quadarella fue por lo tanto plata y el bronce fue para la australiana Ariarne Titmus (8:15.70), que había destronado a Ledecky el domingo en los 400 metros.

La estadounidense, cinco veces campeona olímpica, fue luego declarada baja para los 200 metros y para la final de 1.500 metros en Gwangju-2019 por motivos médicos. Pudo reaparecer para llevarse el título en los 800 metros.
